Foaling outside and weaning late

Well after deciding to wean later than most people and getting some unapproving remarks. I would like to share my experiences. It's not for everyone but it was our choice.

Foaling inside or out?
With Calli it was a differcult choice. She has ROA and stresses easy in the stable yet settles outside.
I was told all sorts from you will lose the foal. You wouldn't be able to control the situation.
It's not normal practice.
Yet wild mares foal outside all the time. It is more natural for them.
Now with hearing all of this it had me worried but we had a massive enclosed shelter which was open for Calli to use. But she had the option of the field as well.

Was it successful?
Yes, yes it was. Calli could pace and roll naturally. She was not stressed in the slightest.

What are the benefits?
More space but shelter for mare if required.
More natural
Mare settled a lot easier

Will I do it again?
Yes I will!

Leaving weaning later or 6 months?
I have now seen both and chose to wean late. Arna learnt more from her mother and was less fazed.

Was it successful?
Yes it was. So much so mare and foal did not stress and we're fairly happy to part ways.
Calli can be quite a stressful mare and anything to help I will do and it worked tremendously.
Arna stayed with my friends pony whilst Calli went back into the herd which was a great distraction.

What are the benefits?
Less stressful situation
Foal learns more from the mother

Would I do it again?
I think I will from now on seeing it for myself and knowing how much they both benefited from it.

What was the vets opinion?
Our vet was very happy with how we dealed with everything and loved (and surprised) with our foaling kit that we had everything but a resuscitator. She loved how strong baby was from Calli being able to walk her around and strengthen her baby.

Obviously every horse is different but the key is knowing your horses and knowing what works best. Don't conform to everyone else's opinions do what's best for your horses! Don't be pressured into what everyone else does.
